Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)

Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is one of the latest techniques in laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopy surgery is a type of keyhole surgery used to examine and operate on the organs inside the abdominal (belly) and pelvic area. Laparoscopic Surgery is performed without making large incisions in the skin.

The SILS procedure is also used in Bariatric surgery and Keyhole surgery. It shows rapid recovery than traditional surgery with lesser pain and scars.

Why SILS is performed?

A traditional open gallbladder surgery requires a big 6-8 inch incision and 3-4 punctures in the body while a Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) is performed with a single incision near the belly button.

When SILS is performed?

SILS is a rapidly evolving technique that has been successfully used by surgeons to operate on the following conditions:
  • Gallbladder stone removal
  • Appendix Removal
  • Removal or repair of the bladder or kidneys
  • Removal or repair of women's reproductive organs
  • Removal of a kidney from a living donor
  • Weight-reduction procedures, such as Bariatric Surgery
  • Treatment of a hernia
  • To examine the liver and pancreas
  • To inspect an injury caused by a trauma or an accident
Benefits of SILS over conventional laparoscopy

It shows the better Cosmesis result due to relatively hidden umbilical scar, less postoperative pain, rapid convalescence, decreased morbidity related to visceral and vascular injury during trocar placement, risk reduction of postoperative wound infection and hernia formation.

The limitations of SILS

Despite its benefits, SILS can’t be recommended in all the medical circumstances. For instance, in the cases when a tumour is too close to a major blood vessel or when there is severe inflammation, the patient still requires open surgery.
